On June 8th, 2024, the Riverdale Park Sustainability Committee set up a table at Trolley Trail Day and I asked people who visited the table to draw a single frame of Belted Kingfisher in flight. The Belted Kingfisher is native to the Anacostia Watershed. It appears to hover in place before it dives into the river to catch a fish.
Compiling the different drawing styles was a challenge but led me into new territory as the kingfisher appears to shape shift and transform through new stylistic forms. Following this thread I remixed the kingfisher's calls and the backgrounds created by participants to form new transmutations.
Thank you to all of the participants who took time to contrinute their drawings: Hayden Hughes, Harper Hughes, Sebastian Heermans, Sarah Waylaud, Gram Walker, Alison Spain, Talika G, Karla Nunez, Roni Beavin, Quinn, Jillian Molina, Michele Larkerd, Bradley Friebele, Olivia Clarke, Elaine Friebele, Sophia Chavez, Logan Finucan, C. Nezzo, Lilyana Herrera
In a workshop held by the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop, participants created a flock of geese using wax resist and watercolor paint for the backdrop. We discussed the geese that live on the Anacostia River and reflected on how climate change is affecting the population. I created this animation of the geese paintings against the backdrops that they painted.
